Balogun drawing inspiration from oldest ever Scotland international who recommended him to Rangers
Published: December 27, 2023Ageing Super Eagles centre-back Leon Balogun has named former Scotland and Rangers central defender David Weir as an inspiration to keep playing.
Weir is Scotland's oldest ever international in history, aged 40 years and 155 days when he started a European Championship qualifier against Spain on October 12, 2010.
The Falkirk native called it quits on his career at the age of 42 with Rangers being the last club he represented, making 218 appearances across all competitions.
Balogun who is now 35 is willing to emulate the former Scottish international as he hopes to keep playing for some more years.
In a recent interview, the Nigeria international shared his admiration for Weir and stated how the latter recommended him to Rangers.
In quotes relayed by Daily Record, Balogun said: "I hold him very dearly. I've never met him but I played with his son, Jensen, at Wigan.
"He was somebody who recommended me at some point [to Rangers first time around] without ever meeting me.
"I hold him in very high regard. He is a good role model. Forty is a good number as well. Maybe I can make it!"
Balogun rejoined Rangers in the summer and after some initial struggles he has now become a vital member of the team, forming a formidable partnership with Connor Goldson at the heart of the defence.
The former Queens Park Rangers defender played a key role in helping the Light Blues scoop the Scottish League Cup at the expense of Aberdeen and will be hoping he can continue to play a vital role for Philippe Clement's side.
He has made 11 appearances across all competitions for the Light Blues this term.
