Wayne Rooney: Man Utd icon will no longer be coaching Aiwu at Birmingham City
Published: January 02, 2024With a statement on their official website, Championship outfit Birmingham City have announced that they have parted company with manager Wayne Rooney and first team coach Carl Robinson.
The Blues have responded to the poor run of results by dismissing the Manchester United legend and the straw that broke the camel's back was the 3-0 loss to Leeds United on January 1.
Rooney only took over the reins at Birmingham City in October 2023 and managed two wins and four draws in fifteen matches while losing nine.
The former Manchester United attacker previously managed Derby County and DC United before his appointment as Birmingham City coach.
Professional development coach Steve Spooner will start coaching Super Eagles-eligible central defender Emanuel Aiwu and his Birmingham City teammates on an interim basis.
Aiwu enjoyed game time under Rooney as he started thirteen out of a possible fifteen matches and was an unused substitute on two occasions, whereas he logged two minutes under the previous coach John Eustace..
The 23-year-old became Birmingham City’s eleventh arrival of the summer transfer window at the end of August, joining the St. Andrew's outfit on loan for the remainder of the season with an option to buy included in the deal,
After 26 matches in the Championship, Birmingham City are 20th in the 24-team table with 28 points.
