Super Eagles player ratings: Lookman steals the show; Onyeka unsung hero; Aina brilliant; Osimhen energetic
Published: January 28, 2024Nigeria booked their place in the quarterfinal of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations courtesy of a 2-0 win over Cameroon on Saturday night.
Allnigeriasoccer.com runs the rule over the Super Eagles players involved in the game.
The starters
Goalkeeper
Stanley Nwabili: The Chippa United shot-stopper was comfortable in goal once again and dealt well with crosses delivered into the penalty area. Unfortunate to have come off in due to injury. 7/10
Defenders
Calvin Bassey: The Fulham defender was astute once again by covering the wide spaces on the left side of the defense. He also did very well when moved to left wing back during the latter stages of the game having created the assist for the second goal. 8.5/10
Semi Ajayi: The West Brom center-back looked more comfortable than in previous games and had a goal ruled out for offside in the first half. He was the least busy of the three center-backs. 7.5/10
William Troost-Ekong: He dealt well with Cameroon center forward Frank Magri-won several aerial duels and made some vital blocks. 8/10
Midfielders
Zaidu Sanusi: The Porto left-back decisions and deliveries in the attacking third left so much to be desired but was decent with his defensive responsibilities. 6/10
Ola Aina: The Cobham product was excellent yet again, keeping Georges-Kévin N'Koudou quiet all game, and could have recorded an assist late in the game. 8.5/10
Frank Onyeka: Another man of the match contender. The Brentford midfielder was everywhere on the pitch, ensuring the Indomitable Lions enjoyed no rhythm. 8/10
Alex Iwobi: Missed a glorious chance late in the game, couldn't affect the game offensively but helped the team to maintain its compactness with his good defensive positions. 6/10
Forwards
Ademola Lookman: Was lucky with his first finish but did very well with the second after a quick exchange of passes with Bassey. 9/10
Victor Osimhen: The Napoli star was all over the Cameroonian defense with his hyperactiveness and could have won the man of the match if not for Lookman's brace. 8/10
Moses Simon; He was the least of the front three as he failed to create anything meaningful in the attacking third but assisted Aina with his defensive duty. 6/10
The substitutes
Francis Uzoho: He did not have much to do when he came on for the injured Nwabali. 5/10
Kenneth Omeruo: The former Chelsea defender also was decent when he came on and helped the defense maintain its compactness 5.5/10
Bright Osayi-Samuel: He came on very late in the game to be assessed. N/A
Paul Onuachu: He also came in with few seconds left to be played and can't be assessed N/A
