West Brom's Super Eagles striker nears return to action after more than three months on the sidelines
Published: March 29, 2024West Brom manager Carlos Corberán has provided an update on the injury status of Nigerian forward Josh Maja.
Maja, who made his senior debut for Nigeria in 2019, is recovering from an ankle ligament injury sustained in a league game against Sunderland in early December last year.
Corberán revealed that Maja is nearing a return to the squad, but caution is being exercised to avoid setbacks.
The manager also emphasized a prudent approach to Maja's recovery, prioritizing avoiding further complications.
"Josh Maja, I think we are one week away from the medical approval that allows me to involve him," Corberán told West Brom's official website.
"He still needs to accumulate more days of training. If everything goes well he will be ready to be part of the squad.
"We are talking about around a week, if he progresses well, because after a kick in the ankle things can change the possibilities of the player a bit."
"The only thing I can tell you is I will try to avoid to give any steps backwards," Corberán continued.
"Sometimes you don't have to push the player too much, you wait three days more to make him ready is better than to lose a week or 10 days with something you can avoid."
Maja's return will be a welcome boost for West Brom as they navigate the crucial final stretch of the season.
Although the forward hasn't been too impressive for The Baggies this season managing just one goal in nine league appearances, his presence will add more firepower to the his side's attack.
Corberán's comments suggest Maja could be available for selection within the next week, providing positive news for West Brom fans eager to see the Nigeria international back on the pitch.
