'Could play a part' - Bayer coach Alonso provides fitness update on Boniface pre-Fortuna Dusseldorf
Published: April 02, 2024Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso has provided a hint on when Victor Boniface will return to action after his long injury lay off.
The Nigerian striker is yet to feature in any competitive game since December, having been nursing an adductor injury which also made him miss the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
He stepped up his recovery process during the last international break but couldn't make it in time to feature for Bayer Leverkusen in their 2-1 triumph over Hoffenheim on matchday 27 of the Bundesliga last weekend.
The 23-year-old could now feature once again for the Black and Reds when they face Düsseldorf in the semifinal of the DFB-Pokal, otherwise known as the German Cup.
This was revealed by Alonso during his pre-match duties ahead of his side's clash against Düsseldorf at the BayArena on Wednesday evening.
In quotes relayed by the official X account of the Bundesliga table-toppers, the Spanish tactician said:
"We have no injured players. Everyone could be available for the squad."
"Boniface could play a part of the game. He trained hard and came through it with a strong mentality. He can't wait to be back on the pitch."
In Boniface's absence, Bayer Leverkusen have continued their impressive form, remaining unbeaten and are on the cusp of winning their first ever Bundesliga title.
The Nigerian striker has 25 goal involvements in 23 games across all competitions and will be hoping to pick it up from where he left it prior to his injury.
