Does Okonkwo deserve a Super Eagles call-up? Arsenal loanee named in League Two TOTS
Published: April 14, 2024Nigerian goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo has been named in the 2023/2024 Sky Bet League Two Team of the Season.
Okonkwo replaced Ben Foster in goal and is enjoying a stellar season at the Racecourse Ground, on loan from Premier League giants Arsenal.
The Hale End Academy product played a vital role in goal for Wrexham as they secured promotion to the League One, keeping 13 clean sheets and conceding 29 goals in 34 games so far.
While the Arsenal-owned player doesn't hold the record for most clean sheets in the division, he has conceded the least number of goals among goalkeepers to have played at least 30 games.
There is no gainsaying that the 22-year-old has come of age, having also played an important role during his loan spell at Sturm Graz in the second half of the season, helping them scoop the Austrian Cup.
With his impressive loan spell for the Red Dragons, Okonkwo could provide competition for Stanley Nwabali as Super Eagles first choice shot stopper.
It is understood that Nigeria Football Federation's Techical Director Augustine Eguavoen is monitoring the progress of Okonkwo with a view to a call-up to the senior national team.
League Two Team of the Season: Okonkwo, Horsfall, Flint, Demetriou, Halliday, Lee, Reid, Keillor-Dunn, Jones, Smith, Langstaff.
