Confirmed: Anjorin returns to Chelsea after loan spell at Portsmouth

With a statement on their official website, Portsmouth have announced their retained and released list following the conclusion of the 2023-2024 season.

Pompey, a popular club in Nigeria due to the exploits of former players Nwankwo Kanu and John Utaka, will be competing in the EFL Championship next season after clinching the League One title with 97 points from 46 games.

Former England youth international of Nigerian descent Faustino Anjorin is among four players who have returned to their parent clubs following the end of their loan spells.

Chelsea will have to make a big decision on the future of Anjorin ahead of next season, whether to keep him, get him off their books permanently or loan him out again.

The academy product will enter the last one year of his contract with the Blues in July, 2024.

Anjorin's season at Portsmouth was his fourth loan spell, having previously played for Lokomotiv Moscow and Huddersfield Town twice on a temporary basis.

Touted as a potential first team star at Chelsea, injuries have not been kind to him in recent seasons, limiting his appearances to 40 since the beginning of the 2021-2022 campaign.

He has not figured for Chelsea since February 2021 when he played against Barnsley in the fifth round of the Emirates FA Cup.

Meanwhile, another Nigeria-eligible player in Sam Folarin has not been offered a new deal and will embark on a new challenge next season.
