'Has been pretty good' - Transfer reporter reveals Southampton have a big call to make on Onuachu
Published: May 06, 2024Southampton are facing a crucial decision regarding the future of on-loan Super Eagles striker Paul Onuachu, according to transfer market reporter Dean Jones.
Onuachu's impressive form on loan at Trabzonspor has put the Saints in a 'win-win situation', where they must choose between bringing him back to the first team squad or capitalizing on his high market value.
Onuachu's signing last January for €18m didn't yield the desired results, with the Nigerian making only 11 appearances before Southampton's relegation.
However, his loan spell in Turkey has seen him regain form, scoring 12 goals in 19 games.
Despite an injury and Africa Cup of Nations commitments, Onuachu recently bagged a hat-trick and an assist against Gaziantep, proving he has returned to form.
"Saints have a big call to make on Onuachu and it could be a win-win situation. He banged in a hat-trick on his return from injury in Turkey and all of a sudden his critics have had to go quiet. His goals return has been pretty good this season and that's good news for the Saints." Dean Jones told GIVEMESPORT.
"If they decide to recall him then they have a striker with renewed confidence and drive, but if they decide he still doesn't fit their style then at least the potential of a transfer can be considered more feasible because he has shown he would hold decent value in the market.
"Trabzonspor might not be able to afford him and want a second season on loan, but that's a situation I'm not sure Saints would really benefit from."
Onuachu's goalscoring record in Belgium and Turkey speaks for itself, but his suitability for Southampton's playing style under Russell Martin is uncertain.
Martin's attacking, possession-heavy approach favors quick and technical players, differing from Onuachu's strengths.
However, his height could prove invaluable in certain situations.
The Championship side will be looking to weigh their options carefully, considering Onuachu's potential impact if recalled or the benefits of selling him while his stock is high.
