Confirmed team news: Super Eagles defender doubtful for Rangers huge game against Celtic
Published: May 10, 2024Speaking at the pre-match press conference ahead of the Old Firm derby, Rangers manager Philippe Clement has admitted that Leon Balogun is doubtful to be included in the matchday squad.
The participation of the Nigeria international is in doubt after he suffered an injury during Ranger's 4-1 win against Kilmarnock last weekend, leading to his substitution at halftime.
After seeing his game time limited for several months following his return to Rangers last summer, Balogun has managed to force his way into the starting lineup in recent weeks, having started three consecutive matches in all competitions.
Clement did not totally rule out the possibility of Balogun playing against Celtic but hinted that the central defender would undergo a last-minute fitness assessment.
On how his squad is looking and updates on any new injuries or players coming back, Clement told reporters: "Nothing new. Only Leon Balogun doubtful so not sure yet if he will be available or not. We will see tomorrow."
Given the importance of the game against Celtic, the Belgian football tactician was asked whether he would take a chance on Leon Balogun despite the Nigerian not being in tiptop condition.
Clement replied: "It's always a decision with me, medical staff and the player. We are now in that part of the season you can think about those things but it needs to be something that stays logical.
"You cannot put a player on the pitch to take him out after five minutes. That's of no use."
Three matches to the end of the season, Rangers trail Celtic by three points at the top of the Scottish Premiership table and must avoid defeat to stand any chance of winning the title.
