Iwobi names his dream Super Eagles starting XI including Chelsea legend
Published: June 06, 2024In an interview with Victor Modo at the Super Eagles camp in Uyo, Alex Iwobi was asked to unveil his dream Super Eagles starting lineup, including only players he has played with during his senior international career.
When Iwobi started the Super Eagles' 1-0 win over Angola in the quarterfinals of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, he overtook his famous uncle Austin Jay-Jay Okocha as Nigeria's seventh most capped player, behind only Ahmed Musa, Vincent Enyeama, Joseph Yobo, John Mikel Obi, Nwankwo Kanu and Muda Lawal.
The Hale End Academy product has earned 78 international caps since making his senior debut in a friendly against Democratic Republic of Congo in October 2015.
Iwobi's finest moment in a Super Eagles shirt was scoring the game-winning goal that qualified Nigeria for the 2018 Fifa World Cup, with his mom and dad cheering on from the stands at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.
Former Wolverhampton Wanderers star Carl Ikeme has been given the nod to start in goal in a 4-3-3 formation.
As for the defence, Iwobi went for Efe Ambrose and 2023 Africa Cup of Nations Best Player William Troost-Ekong as the centre-backs, with Ola Aina as the right-back and Elderson Echiejile as the left-back.
The midfield is composed of two players that won the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in the shape of Chelsea legend John Obi Mikel and former Lazio midfield general Eddy Onazi, with Leicester City ace Wilfred Ndidi taking up the final spot in the middle of the pack.
Leading the line for the Super Eagles in Iwobi's dream Super Eagles starting lineup is reigning African Footballer of the Year, Victor Osimhen and he's joined by Victor Moses and Ademola Lookman in a three-man attack.
Iwobi's dream Super Eagles starting lineup: Ikeme; Aina, Ambrose, Troost-Ekong, Echiejile; Onazi. Ndidi, Mikel; Victor Moses, Osimhen, Lookman.
