Celtic young star Lawal likened to two African players by ex-Arsenal forward
Published: June 12, 2024Omer Riza, a former Arsenal and West Ham forward, has commended the skills of Bosun Lawal, has praised Bosun Lawal's abilities, drawing comparisons to retired Ivory Coast international Yaya Toure and Everton's Malian midfielder Abdoulaye Doucouré.
Bosun Lawal, who was born in Ireland, spent last season on loan at Fleetwood Town, showcasing his ability to excel in both midfield and defense.
In an interview with The Celtic Way, Riza, who previously coached Bosun at Watford, emphasized the significance of Lawal's physical prowess as a distinguishing factor.
He said: “He was big, strong and powerful even in his teens, which are qualities that you cannot teach or create. He was already there, irrespective of what his profile was."
The former Arsenal forward highlighted Lawal's qualities by drawing comparisons with Yaya Toure and Abdoulaye Doucoure.
Regarding the comparison with Abdoulaye Doucoure, he remarked, “When you look at the two players and you see what they’ve got, then you can say there's a comparison there.
“When Bosun was in with us, he probably wasn’t as dynamic and didn’t get up and down the park as much as he probably can now, but that was down to him playing as a centre-back for Watford.
“I say he can be a top, top player at centre-back, because his physical attributes. He wouldn’t have a problem against quick forwards, but he’s shown at Fleetwood that he can play in midfield, too.
"I don’t want to compare him to Yaya Toure, but the profile shows that he can possibly become good in those areas with the existing qualities that he’s got, like the Ivory Coast midfielder."
Having joined Celtic in the summer of 2021, Bosun Lawal, 21, has yet to break into the first team on a permanent basis.
However, the upcoming preseason presents an opportunity for him to showcase his skills and earn the approval of manager Brendan Rodgers.
