After missing out on Michael Olise, Chelsea eye another Cobham-trained forward of Nigerian descent
Published: June 25, 2024After missing out on Cobham product Michael Olise, who is set to complete a summer transfer to Bayern Munich, Chelsea are targeting a move for another Nigeria-eligible forward, who previously played for the club's youth teams.
Chelsea are poised to initiate official negotiations with Bournemouth to secure the services of Bournemouth striker Dominic Solanke, as they seek to bolster their attack.
This development comes after the Blues ended their pursuit of Atletico Madrid's Samu Omorodion and Crystal Palace's Michael Olise.
The 26-year-old Solanke, who has a £65m release clause in his contract, impressed in the 2023/24 Premier League campaign, scoring 19 goals in 38 appearances for Bournemouth.
However, his overall track record in the English top flight is not extensive, making a potential £65m transfer a significant gamble for Chelsea.
Journalist Simon Phillips revealed on his Substack via The Chelsea Chronicle that the west London outfit is contemplating official negotiations to try and secure a deal on their terms, as Bournemouth insist on the full release clause payment upfront.
Phillips noted that his source has mentioned Solanke repeatedly in the last week and a half, indicating growing interest from Chelsea.
While Solanke's release clause presents a hurdle, Chelsea may attempt to negotiate a more favorable deal.
The Blues have already strengthened their defense with the signing of Tosin Adarabioyo from Fulham and now appear focused on enhancing their attack.
The former England youth international is a product of the Chelsea's Cobham academy, leaving the club on loan for Dutch side Vitesse Arnhem in 2015.
Solanke moved to Merseyside, joining Liverpool, after failing to make a league appearance for Chelsea's first team.
