Versatile CB who has committed international future to Nigeria joins Hull City from Sunderland academy
Published: July 09, 2024With a statement on their official website, Championship club Hull City have announced the new intake of academy scholars for the 2024-2025 season, with a Nigerian teenager part of the group.
Calvin Okike is among the twelve new first year scholars and the Tigers have confirmed that he has been snapped up from Sunderland academy on a two-year contract.
As per EFL rules, all players in their U17 year are required to start the 2024-2025 season on a scholarship agreement, before they are permitted to sign a first professional football contract on or after their 17th birthday.
Okike will begin the forthcoming season as an apprentice and will predominantly feature for Hull City's U18 side in the Professional Development League.
Ramell Carter, Cayden Cole, Oskar Gruszkowski, Jake Hopper, Zac Jagielka, Charlie Leach, Rory Leech, Alfie Maskill, Josh Ocaya, Reuben Silk and Jack Topley have also signed scholarships with Hull City.
Okike is eligible to represent England's Young Lions but has committed his international future to Nigeria and he's targeting a call-up to the Golden Eaglets.
He has been described by his minders as a versatile defender who is capable of playing anywhere across the back four including centre-back and left-back.
Dele Adebola, Chuba Akpom, Ola Aina, Hope Akpan, Sone Aluko, Malcolm Ebiowei, Seyi Olofinjana, Austin Okocha and Moses Odubajo have played for Hull City's first team in the past.
