'A truly exceptional goalscorer' - Former Fenerbahce and Galatasaray forward hails Osimhen ahead of derby
Published: September 18, 2024
Dutch-born Cape Verde international Garry Rodrigues has praised Victor Osimhen ahead of the Intercontinental Derby between Fenerbahce and Galatasaray at Ülker Stadyumu Fenerbahçe Şükrü Saracoğlu Spor Kompleksi in İstanbul.
Rodrigues has a foot in both camps, having represented Fenerbahce and Galatasaray in the past.
When asked to reveal his favorite for the game, Rodrigues noted that the two Istanbul clubs bolstered their squads in the summer transfer window, adding that Galatasaray signed very good players.
One of the players signed by the Lion in the recently concluded transfer window is reigning African Footballer of the Year, Victor Osimhen.
The Super Eagles striker sealed a shock season-long loan move to Galatasaray during the international break after proposed transfers to Premier League side Chelsea and Saudi club Al-Ahli fell through on deadline day in the major European leagues.
Garry Rodrigues knows all about the qualities Osimhen will offer to Galatasaray, having faced the Napoli loanee in a World Cup qualifier in September 2021 at Estádio Municipal Adérito Sena.
Osimhen inspired Nigeria to come from behind to secure a 2-1 by scoring just before the half hour mark.
Rodrigues, who was a guest on Özgür Sancar's live broadcast on Radyospor, was quoted as saying by Fanatik: "Both clubs have built very good teams. It is really hard to say who will win. Anything can happen in this league. The best will win.
"Galatasaray made very good transfers. Osimhen is a truly exceptional goal scorer. Sara, Jacobs, Batsuhayi are very good players.
"Of course, there is a pressure environment. How they will manage it is very important... I think they will all be successful. I hope they achieve more success than I did at Galatasaray.''
After missing Galatasaray's rescheduled game against Gaziantep FK , Osimhen is expected to return to the starting lineup against Fenerbahce.
