U18 PL: Tayo Subuloye scores first goal for Chelsea as captain under Nigerian coach
Published: September 22, 2024Wearing the captain's armband, Tayo Subuloye was on target for the first time in the U18 Premier League as Chelsea came from behind to register a 6-2 win against Aston Villa on Saturday afternoon.
After starting the 2024-2025 season with three consecutive losses, Chelsea U18s finally picked up their first three points in the U18 Premier League.
Apart from Subuloye, Chelsea U18s Nigerian tactician Hassan Sulaiman also handed a starting berth to Landon Emenalo, the son of Nigeria's 1994 World Cup star Michael Emenalo.
After George Hemmings broke the deadlock for the visitors inside ten minutes, Subuloye equalized with a towering header past goalkeeper Owen Asemota, who was making his debut for Aston Villa after his move from Arsenal in the summer.
A brace from Ryan Kavuma-McQueen and additional tallies from Sol Gordon and Frankie Runham saw Chelsea go 5-1 up after seventy-one minutes.
Elijah Briscoe pulled one back at minute 74 but Yahya Idrissi netted in the 90th minute to close the scoring.
Tayo Subuloye totaled eight appearances in the U18 Premier League before opening his goalscoring account in the division.
The 16-year-old debuted for Chelsea in the U18 Premier League as a schoolboy, reflecting the high regard youth team coaches at Cobham have for him.
Subuloye is expected to sign his first professional contract at Chelsea before the end of December 2024.
