Nigeria set to miss out on Lecce's Danish-born left-back who is on the radar of Tottenham, Liverpool
Published: September 30, 2024It is looking likely that the Nigeria Football Federation will miss out on the services of talented Lecce left-back Patrick Dorgu, allnigeriasoccer.com reports.
The 19-year-old has been named in the Denmark squad for Nations League matches against European champions Spain and Switzerland in October.
If he makes appearances in both matches, Dorgu will become cap-tied to his country of birth Denmark, even though he is still a teenager.
Although Dorgu played in two competitive matches for Denmark prior to being called up for next month's internationals, he wasn't cap-tied to the Scandinavian nation because of FIFA's eligibility rules.
Players with dual nationality under the age of 21 can only become cap-tied to a national team if they participate in four matches for their first country, and one of these games has to be a competitive fixture.
Dorgu has been invited again to Denmark's senior national team after scoring 47 seconds into his debut against Switzerland on September 5, 2024.
The Copenhagen native qualifies to represent the Super Eagles through his Nigerian parents Paul and Clara Dorgu.
Considered one of the top Danish prospects, Dorgu has impressed since breaking into Lecce's first team last season, scoring three goals in 41 matches from his fullback position.
His impressive performances in the physically demanding Serie A have not gone unnoticed by two of the traditional top six teams in the English Premier League.
Caughtoffside is reporting that Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur are exploring ways to sign Dorgu from Lecce.
Tottenham attempted to bring him to the Premier League in the summer transfer window but a deal did not happen, while Liverpool have identified him as a potential long-term replacement for Andrew Robertson, who is not getting any younger.
Apart from Tottenham and Liverpool, Dorgu is also drawing interest from Serie A giants AC Milan and Napoli.
The Nordsjælland academy product has been on the books of Lecce since the summer of 2022 and has a contract until June 2027.
