Nigeria handed boost in pursuit of Tosin as Chelsea CB omitted from latest England squad
Published: October 03, 2024Nigeria have received a significant boost in their efforts to secure the services of Chelsea defender Tosin Adarabioyo, following his omission from the latest England squad.
The 26-year-old center-back, who has previously represented England at various youth levels, was not included in the squad for the upcoming international fixtures against Finland and Greece in the UEFA Nations League.
Interim England manager Lee Carsley has named defenders John Stones, Kyle Walker, Levi Colwill, Ezri Konsa, Rico Lewis, Marc Guéhi, and Trent Alexander-Arnold for the upcoming games.
The 27-year-old Tosin has played for England at various youth levels, including the U16, U17, U18, and U19 teams, but has yet to make an appearance for the senior national team.
Tosin last represented England nearly nine years ago, with his last appearance for the Young Lions occurring against the Japan youth team on November 15, 2015.
This development paves the way for Nigeria, who are in search of a dependable central defender to strengthen their defensive lineup and establish a future partnership with Calvin Bassey.
The Fulham star partnered with William Troost-Ekong and Semi Ajayi for both 2025 AFCON qualifiers against Benin and Rwanda under interim manager Austin Eguavoen.
The partnership with Troost-Ekong (31) and Semi Ajayi (30) raises concerns about the future of the defense.
Their lack of pace could render the team vulnerable to exploitation by opposing sides as they gear up for the 2025 AFCON tournament.
Tosin, who has delivered impressive performances in the Premier League with Fulham and Chelsea, is unlikely to face challenges adapting, having already played alongside several Nigerian players at club level.
A product of Manchester City's academy, Tosin has previously played with Ola Aina, Ademola Lookman, Alex Iwobi, and notably Calvin Bassey.
Tosin formed a strong defensive partnership with Bassey at Fulham before the latter's move to Chelsea in the summer.
