What Nantes coach said about Uyo-bound Super Eagles forward Moses Simon after defeat to Lyon
Published: October 06, 2024
Nantes coach Antoine Kombouaré praised Moses Simon for his performance during his side's 2-0 loss to Olympique Lyonnais in the matchday seven fixture played at Parc Olympique Lyonnais on Sunday afternoon.
In the 14th minute of the game, Simon came close to giving the Canaries the lead after getting inside the penalty box and attempted to find the back of the net but was denied by Lyon goalkeeper Lucas Perri.
The away side were made to ruin the Nigeria international miss as Nicolas Tagliafico gave Lyon the lead in the 22nd minute, striking his shot into the bottom corner.
Six minutes before the hour mark, an own goal from Nicolas Pallois doubled Lyon's advantage, and Nantes were unable to stage a comeback.
Speaking in his post-match conference, Kombouaré singled out Simon for praise despite a goal-scoring opportunity early on in the game
"Simon gave a lot, but everyone would have had to be at their level. We were too timid with the ball. We used a lot of long balls in the first half, and they made us run," he told the club's official website.
The 29-year-old has had a good start to the season, registering two goals and two assists in seven games, and was included in whoscored.com's Ligue 1 Team of the Month for September.
Moses Simon is expected to hop on a plane bound for Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital in the coming hours to link up with his international teammates ahead of their October internationals.
Manager Austin Eguavoen will be hoping that the versatile winger can replicate his club form for the Super Eagles in their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualification games against Libya.
