'Two or three players close to them' - Rwanda coach reveals plans to neutralise Osimhen, Boniface, Simon
Published: November 18, 2024
Rwanda coach Torsten Spittler attended the mandatory pre-match press conference on Sunday evening, on the eve of his side's must-win match against the Super Eagles in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
Heading into the final round of matches in Group D of the Afcon qualifiers, the Super Eagles will finish as group leaders regardless of the outcome of Monday evening's fixture at Godswill Akpabio International Stadium.
Rwanda's slim qualification hopes rest on achieving an unlikely away victory against Nigeria, coupled with Benin not winning in Libya.
The odds are against Rwanda as they lost in their last two visits to Nigeria, conceding four goals without scoring.
The Wasps face a daunting task qualifying for the Africa Cup of Nations as the Super Eagles have the best defensive record in the qualifiers with only one goal conceded.
However, the Super Eagles attack, featuring the likes of Victor Osimhen, Victor Boniface and Moses Simon, remains their greatest strength.
At the press conference, Spittler indicated that man-marking Nigeria's forwards might be part of his plan to neutralize their strong attacking lineup.
The German told reporters: "Our approach is we have to work as a team and to compete against your strikers one against one is nearly impossible.
"We have to organize ourselves always, mostly when we have two or three players close to these guys because, otherwise, it will be very difficult.
"So it's a matter of organization and I am very hopeful that my team can do it because we have shown it in some matches and this is our aim for tomorrow too."
The last time Rwanda played Nigeria, goalkeeper Fiacre Ntwari was the hero, making an impressive eight saves from inside the box.
