Morocco ace Hakimi beats Boniface, Lookman, Ronwen Williams, Salah, 5 others to win Lion d'Or award

Paris Saint-Germain's Moroccan fullback Achraf Hakimi has won the 2024 Lion d'Or Award after a poll conducted by Al-Mountakhab newspaper, involving 41 media outlets, including journalists and sports experts.

The Golden Lion is awarded to the standout men's football player for the period spanning September 2023 to September 2024.

The players are shortlisted based on a set of criteria, including the titles the player has won with both his national team and club, the influence of the player on both his national team and club, as well as his sportsmanship and public image.

Hakimi finished first ahead of Atalanta's Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman, while Morocco's Al Ain attacker Soufiane Rahimi secured third place.

Brahim Diaz (Morocco, Real Madrid) and Mohamed Salah (Egypt, Liverpool) complete the top five rankings.

Bayer Leverkusen's Nigeria international Victor Boniface finished seventh, while South Africa goalkeeper Ronwen Williams ranked ninth. 

Hakimi received 162 points, 66 more than Lookman, who secured second place in the rankings.

The defender was instrumental in PSG's UEFA Champions League semifinal run and celebrated a bronze medal win with Morocco at the 2024 Olympic Games.

He achieved a domestic treble with PSG, winning Ligue 1, the Coupe de France and the Trophée des Champions in the 2023-2024 season.

Hakimi, Lookman and Ronwen Williams are among the five players shortlisted for the CAF Awards 2024 Player of the Year top prize.
