Chelsea loanee Ugochukwu walking the walk: Southampton midfielder ranked PL top tackler for GW20
Published: January 07, 2025
Chelsea loanee Lesley Ugochukwu recently stated that can bring three key attributes to the Southampton team under new manager Ivan Juric, citing his height, long legs and aggression.
The France U21 international, nephew of retired Nigeria international Onyekachi Apam, is back in favour at the Saints as he was given minutes in the last four Premier League games, having sat out the previous four.
According to the statisticians at Whoscored.com, Ugochukwu made more tackles than any other Premier League player in the twentieth round of matches in the division.
Southampton were hammered 5-0 by Brentford at St Mary's Stadium despite Ugochukwu's efforts in the middle of the pack.
Brentford secured their biggest-ever Premier League win, with Kevin Schade's early strike and Bryan Mbeumo's second-half double, followed by stoppage-time goals from Keane Lewis-Potter and Yoane Wissa.
Ugochukwu registered eight tackles against the Bees to rank first ahead of Aston Villa's Matty Cash (7), Manchester City's Mateo Kovacic (6) Crystal Palace's Tyrick Mitchell (6), Tottenham Hotspur's Pedro Porro (5) and West Ham United's Lucas Paqueta (5).
For the second time in his career, the French-Nigerian midfielder played ninety minutes in the English top-flight during his twenty-second appearance.
Despite impressing during pre-season preparations, Chelsea decided it was best for the 20-year-old to be loaned out, as he was not guaranteed a spot in the starting lineup.
