141 minutes in 7 games: Three reasons Boniface has lost starting role at Bayer Leverkusen
Published: March 03, 2025
Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface has lost his status as an undisputed starter for Bundesliga leaders Bayer Leverkusen.
Since returning from injury in late January, the Nigerian international has managed just 141 minutes across seven league matches, struggling to reclaim his place in Xabi Alonso’s starting lineup.
In his absence, Alonso has turned to alternative attacking options, including Nathan Tella, Patrick Schick, and Amine Adli.
Several factors have contributed to Boniface’s current role as a backup option for Die Werkself.
Allnigeriasoccer.com highlights three possible factors that may have contributed to his current situation in Germany.
Change in Tactical Approach
Boniface thrived as a target man when he first joined Leverkusen, benefiting from Alonso’s system that emphasized a focal point in attack.
However, since the turn of the year, Alonso has adopted a more fluid and dynamic approach to improve consistency and maintain their title charge against Bayern Munich.
This shift has seen Leverkusen deploy a more mobile attacking setup, which does not rely on a traditional striker.
As a result, players with better movement and adaptability have been preferred, making it difficult for Boniface to fit into the system.
Lack of Intensity in Pressing
Beyond the tactical shift, Alonso’s new approach demands higher energy and intensity from the forward players.
Nathan Tella, in particular, has impressed in this role, using his pressing ability to force turnovers and contribute defensively.
Tella’s work rate, versatility, and quick transitions have made him a valuable asset, often getting the nod ahead of Boniface.
His ability to stretch defenses and create space has proven crucial in Leverkusen’s push for the Bundesliga title.
Strong Competition from In-Form Players
Despite scoring ten goals across all competitions this season, Boniface has found it difficult to break back into the starting XI due to the impressive form of other attackers.
Patrick Schick, who replaced him during his injury absence, has been prolific, netting 16 league goals.
Meanwhile, Nathan Tella has also made a significant impact, recently scoring against Eintracht Frankfurt.
With both Schick and Tella delivering strong performances, Boniface has been left with limited opportunities to reclaim his spot.
While Leverkusen are aiming to secure the Bundesliga title, Boniface will need to adapt to Alonso’s evolving tactics and prove his ability to contribute in a more fluid system.
As the season progresses, his chances may depend on injuries, squad rotation, or a return to form that forces Alonso to reconsider his attacking setup.
For now, the Nigerian striker faces a battle to regain his starting role in a highly competitive Leverkusen squad.
