'Definitely one of them' - Denmark U21 coach keeping tabs on Man Utd's dual-national striker
Published: March 05, 2025
Denmark U21 national team coach Steffen Højer has confirmed that he is keeping tabs on talented Manchester United striker of Nigerian descent, Chido Obi ahead of the international break in March 2025.
Glostrup-born Obi qualifies to represent his country of birth Denmark as well as Nigeria, where his parents originally hail from.
Denmark are seemingly in pole position to secure his international future, as he is provisionally cap-tied after playing competitive games for their U17 team, notably shining at the 2024 European U17 Championship and making the Team of the Tournament.
At just 17 years old, Obi has already played in three matches for Manchester United's first team and even came incredibly close to scoring the match-winner against Fulham at the weekend.
The former Arsenal schoolboy was in red-hot form in his last appearance for United's youth team, netting a hat-trick in a 5-1 win over Chelsea in the FA Youth Cup to enhance his burgeoning reputation and take his tally for the season to 15 goals across all competitions.
Obi's performances have not gone unnoticed by Højer, who refused to confirm whether the young striker is ready to join Denmark's U21 team.
"I think we're all following Chido's development. If I didn't keep an eye on a player like him, I wouldn't be good enough for my job," Steffen Højer said to bold.dk.
"There has been a clamour for strikers for a while. I think we are currently overflowing with talented attacking players. Many of them are very exciting, and Chido is definitely one of them.
"It's not very often that you see a 17-year-old player running into Old Trafford, so we are naturally very aware of him."
He added: ""When is the right time for Chido to join the U21, and which national team he should play for, is an assessment that we make on an ongoing basis.
"He was with the U18 national team last time, but he has also made his first-team debut for Manchester United since. It's still exciting, after all."
Chido Obi has notched 18 goals in 31 appearances for Denmark's youth teams.
