2026 Word Cup qualifier: Three Zimbabwe players Super Eagles should watch closely

The Super Eagles will be looking to strengthen their push for a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup when they take on Zimbabwe on Tuesday.

After a slow start to their qualification campaign, Nigeria revived their hopes with a commanding 2-0 win over Rwanda, thanks to a brace from Victor Osimhen last Friday.

The victory propelled them back into contention, making the clash against Zimbabwe a crucial one.

As Nigeria prepares for this encounter, three Zimbabwean players stand out as potential threats to the Super Eagles’ ambitions.

Knowledge Musona

A seasoned campaigner for Zimbabwe, Knowledge Musona remains one of the team’s most influential players.

The veteran forward demonstrated his quality against Benin, delivering a captain’s performance by scoring a well-taken goal in the 59th minute.

His ability to find space and finish clinically makes him a constant threat in the attacking third.

Musona’s experience will be vital for Zimbabwe, especially against a Super Eagles defense that has shown vulnerability at times.

His link-up play, positioning, and leadership qualities could trouble Nigeria’s backline.

If given room to operate, he has the ability to dictate attacking moves and create goal-scoring chances for himself and his teammates.

Marshall Munetsi

Munetsi has been one of Zimbabwe’s standout performers in recent years, and his display against Benin underlined his importance.

The midfielder played a key role in his team’s comeback, scoring a crucial goal in the 44th minute to reduce the deficit. His well-timed run into the box and composed finish showcased his attacking instincts.

Beyond his goal-scoring ability, Munetsi’s physicality and work rate in midfield make him a formidable opponent.

He excels at breaking up play, winning duels, and driving his team forward.

Nigeria’s midfield will need to be wary of his presence, as his ability to transition quickly from defense to attack could cause problems.

Munetsi’s battle with the likes of Wilfred Ndidi and Alex Iwobi in midfield could be a defining factor in the game.

Divine Lunga

At the back, Divine Lunga will be a key figure for Zimbabwe. The left-back put in a solid defensive shift against Benin, making crucial tackles and interceptions.

Despite picking up a yellow card, he remained composed under pressure and played a crucial role in helping his team secure a point.

Lunga’s defensive awareness and ability to read the game make him a reliable presence in Zimbabwe’s backline.

He also contributes going forward, providing width and supporting attacking moves when needed.

Nigeria’s wingers, particularly Samuel Chukwueze and Moses Simon, will have to find a way past him if they are to create chances from wide areas.

As the Super Eagles prepare for this vital clash, keeping these three Zimbabwean players in check will be crucial to securing another victory and boosting their World Cup qualification hopes.
