Iwobi, Aina, Lookman played out of position: Ex-Super Eagles star blasts Chelle for selection blunder

Following the Super Eagles' disappointing 1-1 draw against Zimbabwe in Uyo last Tuesday in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers, former Nigerian international fullback Abbey George has criticized head coach Eric Chelle for his team selection.

Speaking in an interview with Brila, George voiced his concerns over the tactical decisions that he believes led to Nigeria dropping crucial points, leaving them in a tight position for qualification.

“I believe Chelle made a mistake with the selection. He tried to accommodate all his best players rather than pick the best team,” George stated.

“There’s no reason to play Ola Aina, who’s been excellent at right-back, at left-back when Onyemaechi is on the bench. The same goes for Lookman and Iwobi, who were played out of position.”

Aina, known for his reliable performances at right-back, was deployed at left-back during the match, a decision George feels disrupted the team’s balance.

Despite having players like Onyemaechi available for selection, George questioned the move to play Aina out of his natural position.

“With someone like Onyemaechi on the bench, Aina could have stayed on the right where he’s most comfortable,” he added.

George also pointed out the decision to play Ademola Lookman and Alex Iwobi out of their usual positions, criticizing Chelle’s tactical choices. "Lookman and Iwobi are more effective when played in their natural roles. Trying to fit them into roles they aren’t accustomed to undermines the team’s effectiveness," he explained.

The Super Eagles were leading 1-0 with just five minutes left on the clock but ultimately conceded a late goal, allowing Zimbabwe to snatch a draw.

George criticized the lack of game management during those final moments, which cost Nigeria two precious points.

“As players on the field, with just five minutes remaining, there’s no need to be pushing forward. They should have held onto the 1-0 lead and secured the three points. It's basic game management that should come naturally, especially with experienced players,” George said.

He further stressed that the Super Eagles' senior players, particularly those from top European clubs, should have shown greater leadership and composure.

“Experienced players from big European teams should know how to manage a crucial game. They need to show some humility and be more composed when the team is ahead,” George emphasized.

Despite the setback, George remains hopeful about Nigeria's qualification chances, but he warned that they must win their next match and rely on favorable results elsewhere.

"Although qualification is still possible, we must win the next match and hope the other outcomes work in our favor," George concluded.
