Southampton's sister club interested in holder of Nigeria's fastest goal in an international match
Published: April 10, 2025
Southampton's sister club Goztepe are reportedly setting their sights on Nigerian striker Paul Onuachu ahead of the upcoming summer transfer window, as they look to bolster their squad for a potential European campaign next season, as reported by yeniasır.
Onuachu, who holds the record for Nigeria’s fastest-ever goal in an international match—netting inside ten seconds during a 2019 friendly against Egypt—has seen a resurgence in form since the start of 2025.
The towering 30-year-old forward has scored four goals and contributed one assist in twelve Premier League appearances this year, rediscovering his spark under former manager Ivan Juric before Southampton’s eventual relegation to the Championship.
His return to form, coupled with Southampton’s drop from England’s top flight, has cast doubts over his future at St. Mary’s, with reports suggesting a move away is imminent.
Goztepe are now emerging as a serious contender to land the Nigerian international, who previously impressed during a loan spell at Trabzonspor.
Göztepe are also targeting two of Onuachu’s current teammates—Kamaldeen Sulemana and Mateus Fernandes—as part of an ambitious plan to reinforce their squad should they secure European football.
Currently, in the semifinals of the Turkish Cup, The Goz could earn a Europa League berth by lifting the domestic trophy.
The İzmir-based club believes that the trio from Southampton could significantly enhance their chances of competing on the continental stage, with Onuachu seen as a marquee signing due to his prior success in the Turkish Super Lig.
A return to Turkey could also serve as a platform for Onuachu to reignite his national team ambitions.
With the Four-Nation tournament in London on the horizon, the forward is keen to earn a recall to the Super Eagles and reclaim his place among Nigeria’s attacking options.
