'Chance to try out new players' - Super Eagles coach Chelle plans tactical experiments at Unity Cup
Published: April 10, 2025
Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has expressed optimism as Nigeria prepares to feature in the upcoming Unity Cup tournament in London, which will see the West African giants compete alongside Ghana, Jamaica, and Trinidad & Tobago.
Chelle, who took charge of the Nigerian national team in January 2025, has already overseen crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches against Rwanda and Zimbabwe.
While his side secured an impressive 2-0 win over Rwanda in Kigali, the 1-1 draw at home against Zimbabwe in Uyo left fans disappointed and reignited concerns about the team's qualification chances for the global tournament set to take place across the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
Amid growing pressure, Chelle views the Unity Cup as a timely opportunity to regroup and fine-tune his squad ahead of the resumption of the qualifiers in September.
"We're looking forward to taking part in the Unity Cup as it will give us the chance to try out a few new players in different roles, helping us to strengthen our squad before the matches in September and October," Chelle said in a statement released by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
Vice captain William Troost-Ekong also weighed in on the tournament's significance, highlighting the importance of team bonding and preparation.
"This is a great tournament for us to reunite and continue strategizing for the upcoming World Cup qualifying games," the experienced defender remarked.
The NFF has confirmed Nigeria's participation in the four-nation tournament and revealed that all matches will be played at the Gtech Community Stadium, home of Premier League side Brentford FC.
The Unity Cup is expected to provide a competitive platform for the Super Eagles to test new strategies and build momentum ahead of their crucial qualification fixtures later in the year.
