Lookman's future: Atalanta's new boss reveals his stance amid interest in Africa's best player
Published: June 09, 2025
Newly appointed Atalanta head coach Ivan Juric has made it clear he wants reigning African Footballer of the Year Ademola Lookman to remain at the club despite growing interest from European heavyweights.
Lookman, who has been instrumental for Atalanta since his arrival in 2022, has emerged as one of the most sought-after players in Serie A.
With Napoli and Juventus reportedly circling, speculation over the 27-year-old’s future has intensified as the summer transfer window gathers momentum.
Juric, who takes over from long-serving manager Gian Piero Gasperini, addressed the media for the first time on Monday.
The former Torino coach emphasized the need for squad stability, particularly highlighting Lookman and Brazilian midfielder Ederson as key figures he hopes to retain.
“It will be tough in the league, there will be fierce competitors,” Juric said during his introductory press conference, as reported by Calcio Napoli.
“The idea would be to keep both Lookman and Ederson, even if the club has clear ideas on the market and I have not made any request on players, not even on those I have had.”
Lookman has enjoyed a sensational spell in Bergamo, tallying 52 goals and 25 assists in 108 appearances across all competitions.
His crowning moment came in May 2024, when he scored a stunning hat-trick in the Europa League final against Bayer Leverkusen to secure Atalanta’s first-ever European title.
Despite the mounting transfer speculation, Juric’s remarks suggest Atalanta are determined to keep their key player for the 2025/2026 season.
Still, as the summer window heats up, the Super Eagles star may yet be tempted by the prospect of a move to a top European club.
