'He's still young' - Former Super Eagles GK defends Harcourt after display against Argentina U20s
Published: October 09, 2025
Former Super Eagles goalkeeper Dosu Joseph has rallied support for teenage shot-stopper Ebenezer Harcourt following Nigeria's exit from the 2025 Fifa U20 World Cup in Chile.
Harcourt, who was a key figure for the Flying Eagles during their qualification and continental campaigns, has come under heavy criticism after a series of errors contributed to Nigeria's 4-0 defeat to Argentina in the Round of 16.
The 15-year-old mistimed his movement that allowed Alejo Sarco to score in the second minute and later failed to stop Maher Carrizo's free kick in the 23rd minute, both goals that tilted the match in Argentina's favour.
In a post on social media, the Olympic gold medalist Dosu Joseph took to social media to defend the young goalkeeper, urging Nigerians to show understanding and patience.
"The recent performances of Flying Eagles goalkeeper remember that Harcourt is still a young and developing goalkeeper," he said on X.
Dosu, who himself rose to prominence as a young goalkeeper in the 1990s, emphasized that criticism at this stage could hinder Harcourt’s confidence and progress.
"All he needs now is a word of encouragement, Harcourt is still a young goalkeeper that will grow as time goes on."
Before the World Cup, Harcourt impressed with his outstanding displays at the WAFU Zone B Championship and the U20 AFCON, where his penalty heroics helped Nigeria secure a bronze medal.
However, he found it difficult to replicate his impressive form at the 2025 FIFA U20 World Cup, conceding in every match of the tournament.
Following the underwhelming outing, Harcourt is expected to take the experience and criticism in stride as he works to improve and continue his development.
