Four Lesotho players the Super Eagles must contain in crucial World Cup qualifier
Published: October 10, 2025
As the Super Eagles of Nigeria fight to stay in contention for the 2026 Fifa World Cup, their clash with Lesotho at the Peter Mokaba Stadium is set to be a defining battle.
With Nigeria trailing in Group C, victory is non-negotiable against a Lesotho side that has already proven capable of frustrating the three-time African champions.
The Crocodiles, who earned a surprise 1-1 draw in Uyo last year, have several standout players who could trouble the Eagles.
1. Jane Thabantso: The 29-year-old Matlama FC winger is Lesotho’s most dangerous attacking outlet.
Known for his blistering pace and quick feet, Thabantso has featured in six matches in the World Cup qualifiers, registering a goal.
His experience on the flanks gives Lesotho width and transition options in attack.
2. Sera Motebang: He leads Lesotho's attack and is one of the most experienced players in the squad.
Motebang has a knack for finding space inside the box, while his aerial ability and physical presence make him a constant danger during set-pieces.
He remains one of Lesotho’s most reliable finishers and an important figure in the team's offensive structure.
3. Motlomelo Mkhwanazi: The centre-back brings solidity and leadership to the Crocodiles' defence.
Mkhwanazi famously scored Lesotho's opener in Uyo and is known for his strong tackling and aerial duels.
His defensive positioning and long-range passing remain key assets for the team.
4. Rethabile Rasethuntsa: The 30-year-old defender combines defensive strength with a goal threat from corners.
His ability to organize the backline and make timely interceptions has been vital in Lesotho’s campaign. He has played five matches in the qualifiers, scoring a goal.
