Chelsea icon Mikel available for selection against Liverpool Legends at Stamford Bridge
Published: October 11, 2025
Former Super Eagles captain John Obi Mikel is set to make a return to Stamford Bridge on Saturday, October 11, when Chelsea Legends host Liverpool Legends in a rematch of last season's encounter at Anfield.
According to Chelsea's official website, several members of the club's 2012 UEFA Champions League-winning squad, including Mikel, will be available for selection for the charity fixture.
The list of confirmed participants features a host of iconic names such as John Terry, Petr Čech, Gary Cahill, Ramires, Salomon Kalou, Florent Malouda, Eden Hazard, Diego Costa, Marcel Desailly, Claude Makélélé, and Katie Chapman.
Earlier this year, a Chelsea Legends side managed by Roberto Di Matteo suffered a 2–0 defeat to Liverpool Legends in the annual LFC Foundation charity match at Anfield.
Mikel and retired Nigeria international Celestine Babayaro both featured in that game, with the former playing the entire match alongside Robert Huth and Florent Malouda.
Mikel enjoyed a highly successful ten-and-a-half-year spell at Chelsea, during which he won two Premier League titles, four FA Cups, two League Cups, as well as both the UEFA Champions League and Europa League before departing in 2017.
The 2013 Africa Cup of Nations winner announced his retirement from professional football in September 2022, following a distinguished career that also included stints with Lyn 1896 FK, Trabzonspor, Middlesbrough, Stoke City and Kuwait SC.
During his time in west London, the midfielder faced Liverpool 21 times in competitive fixtures, recording five wins, seven draws, and nine defeats.
