Super Eagles' Afcon 2025 squad: Are Nigeria's selections ready for continental glory?

Super Eagles' Afcon 2025 squad: Are Nigeria's selections ready for continental glory?

As the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations kicks off in Morocco on Sunday,  December 21, 2025, all eyes are on Nigeria’s Super Eagles.

Following a runners-up finish in the last edition and a long wait since their last title in 2013, expectations for the team are high.

Coach Eric Chelle has named a 28-man squad that boasts one of Africa’s most feared attacking lines.

Victor Osimhen leads the charge, supported by Ademola Lookman, Samuel Chukwueze, Paul Onuachu, Moses Simon, Akor Adams, Chidera Ejuke and Cyriel Dessers.

The depth upfront gives Nigeria tactical flexibility and makes them a serious threat in open play and crucial moments.

The squad has also generated discussion due to several notable omissions.

Goalkeeper Maduka Okoye, forward Tolu Arokodare, and Nathan Tella were widely expected to be included but missed the final cut.

Meanwhile, Kelechi Iheanacho and Victor Boniface, both of whom have been battling injuries and inconsistent form, were left out.

Chelle’s selections reflect a balance of experience and emerging talent. In midfield,

Wilfred Ndidi, Alex Iwobi, Frank Onyeka, and Raphael Onyedika provide stability and tactical awareness, while youngsters like Ebenezer Akinsanmiro, Ryan Alebiosu , Salim Fago, and Tochukwu Nnadi hint at Nigeria’s commitment to long-term development.

At the back, Calvin Bassey, Semi Ajayi, Bright Osayi‑Samuel, and Zaidu Sanusi form a reliable defensive spine, though questions remain about cohesion under AFCON pressures.

The three-time Africa Cup of Nations champions will begin their campaign against Tanzania on 23 December, followed by matches with Tunisia and Uganda.

While advancing from the group stage is expected, AFCON is known for surprises, and the Super Eagles will need to combine skill, discipline, and mental toughness to progress.

On paper, Nigeria’s squad has star power, depth, and tactical balance.

However, success will depend on chemistry, adaptability, and handling the intensity of knockout stages.

With fans eager for redemption after missing the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the Super Eagles enter AFCON 2025 with both hope and pressure.
