Ademola Lookman, Joe Aribo and Emmanuel Dennis all endured frustrating starts to life at their new clubs, as the Super Eagles trio recorded winless league debuts over the weekend in La Liga, EFL Championship and Danish Superliga respectively.
At the Riyadh Air Metropolitano on Sunday evening, all eyes were on Atletico Madrid's marquee signing Ademola Lookman but the former African Footballer of the Year could not inspire the Rojiblancos to a victory despite spending 74 minutes on the pitch.
In his first match at the Metropolitano , Lookman thought he had a perfect introduction to his new home fans when his header found the net in the 45th minute, only for the goal to be ruled out for offside.
Real Betis went on to secure the win, with former Manchester United forward Antony netting what proved to be the game-winning goal with a snapshot in the 28th minute.
Lookman was booked in the 56th minute for a dangerous tackle as he tried to get to the end of a cross.
In England, Southampton loanee Joe Aribo also made his full debut as Leicester City suffered a 2-1 loss to Birmingham City at St. Andrew’s @ Knighthead Park on Saturday.
The former Rangers star received a booking just five minutes into the match for a reckless challenge.
Ibrahim Osman and Jay Stansfield’s strikes, separated by Abdul Fatawu's goal, were enough to see the Blues take all three points in the rain.
Elsewhere, former Nottingham Forest forward Emmanuel Dennis made his first competitive appearance in nine months as Brondby and Randers played out a goalless draw at Brondby Stadium on Sunday evening.
With Brondby pushing for a winner, Dennis was introduced off the bench in the 63rd minute, replacing Jacob Ambæk.
