fSuper Eagles goalkeeper Francis Uzoho has vowed to remain focused and supportive of his teammates as Nigeria prepares for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.
Speaking exclusively to Elegbete TV Sports, the experienced shot-stopper reflected on his role within the squad, his relationship with fellow goalkeepers, and his mindset ahead of Nigeria’s opening match against Tanzania on Tuesday, December 23.
Named in an Afcon squad for the fourth consecutive tournament, Uzoho was asked about working alongside the other goalkeepers at multiple Afcons.
He highlighted the unique qualities each player brings to the team and how their collaboration strengthens the squad.
He said, "It's a big number but each of them have their own special abilities and it was great working with each of them.
"Goalkeeping position is special and we find every possible way to make a good environment for us to work together as a team."
The inclusion of Uzoho in the AFCON squad sparked surprise and debate among Nigerian fans, with many questioning his form and consistency.
Reflecting on the skepticism, Uzoho underlined his determination to focus on the present and deliver when called upon.
He stated, "The past is the past. I don't dwell in the past. Every time I get the opportunity to participate in the AFCON, I always give my best, and that's what I intend to do if I get the opportunity this time around. I expect them to expect a good performance from anybody that gets to play."
Uzoho also addressed his experience from the last AFCON, when he lost his starting spot to Stanley Nwabali despite featuring heavily in the qualifiers.
He explained that he viewed the situation positively, emphasizing the competitive nature of football and the importance of healthy rivalry within the squad.
"Positively, because it's a game of competition. Every position in the team we've got two or three great players in that position and the competition needs to be there," he said.
Despite any changes in the pecking order, Uzoho reaffirmed his commitment to supporting the designated starter and fostering a positive team environment.
Reflecting on his past experiences and his professional mindset, he added, "When he (Nwabali) was chosen to be the number one choice I had to support him, and that's what I'll do now if he is still the one that will play."
As the countdown to Nigeria’s AFCON opener continues, Uzoho’s attitude and experience will be crucial assets, ensuring the Super Eagles approach their first match against Tanzania with confidence, unity, and determination to make an impact on the continental stage.
