Super Eagles midfielder Frank Onyeka has opened up on Nigeria's defeat to Morocco in the semifinal of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, citing both tactical challenges and officiating decisions as key factors.
The Brentford star was on parade at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, Rabat for 120 minutes before making way for AC Milan loanee Samuel Chukwueze in a tactical substitution.
Against the Atlas Lions, Eric Chelle's side had their worst performance in the Afcon, managing only two shots, with only one on target over the course of regulation and extra time, while Morocco registered sixteen shots with five on target.
Veteran goalkeeper Yassine Bounou was the hero of the shootout, saving spot kicks from Bruno Onyemaechi and Samuel Chukwueze as Morocco secured a 4-2 win.
Asked what made the difference for Morocco, Onyeka pointed to their disciplined approach and the role of Ghanaian referee Daniel Nii Laryea.
"Tactically, they were very good. They knew what we were going to do and tried to close us down. I think that was the problem in the game," Onyeka told Oma Sports TV.
"But the referee also made it easy for them because, whenever we had our own moments, he tried to cut them off, which killed our momentum and gave the Moroccans the advantage.
"That's why it was different. Morocco were very good, I give it to them."
