Super Eagles goalkeeper Amas Obasogie has expressed gratitude, patience and confidence as he continues his journey with the Nigerian national team at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, despite yet to make his competitive debut.
Speaking about his experience in camp so far, Obasogie described the environment as positive and fulfilling.
He told reporters in Morocco, “Yeah, it's fine. It's nice being in camp and it's a joyful team also representing Nigeria. I'm very happy and grateful.”
The goalkeeper highlighted the togetherness within the squad and his appreciation for being part of the group representing the country.
Obasogie also spoke about the goalkeeping department, where he trains alongside Stanley Nwabali and Francis Uzoho.
He emphasized the unity and mutual respect within the group, noting that collaboration is central to their daily work.
“Yeah, the goalkeeping department is unique. As you can see, we are going day by day and always doing our best to make the team be in a good position,” he said.
He added, “Stanley Nwabali and Uzoho, they are great guys and guys who share things together and share ideas together and also for me they are my big brothers and I respect them and I always be around them.”
Addressing questions about waiting for a competitive appearance despite being with the team for a while, Obasogie remained calm and hopeful. “God willing every opportunity will come surely and I'll take my position by the special grace of God when the opportunities be given,” he stated.
The goalkeeper also revealed his inspiration in the role, naming former Super Eagles captain Vincent Enyeama as his role model.
“My role model has always been Vincent Enyeama who I have always loved right from day one,” Obasogie said.
He continued, “He's a great man and each time I watch him he always inspire me to do more and where he started from Nigeria league and also yeah each time I watch where he started from, is so inspiring and trying to do more and being here representing Super Eagles.”
Following the dramatic penalty shootout loss to Morocco in the semi-final, Obasogie spoke about the mood in camp.
“Penalty is a game of luck. But unfortunately, we could not make Nigerians happy,” he said.
“Believe is a normal thing playing penalty, but the vibe is still there. We hoping to get the bronze to make Nigeria happy and put smile on our face also.”
After their semi-final defeat, Nigeria will face Egypt on Saturday in the third-place playoff as they seek to end the tournament on a high note.
