'They've had a look' - Merson gives his take on Bassey's handball in Fulham's win at Burnley

Former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson has reacted to the controversial handball incident involving Calvin Bassey during Fulham’s 3–1 victory over Burnley at Craven Cottage on Saturday.

The incident occurred in the first half when Bassey blocked a strike from Zian Flemming inside the penalty area, prompting loud appeals from Burnley players for a spot kick.

However, the referee waved play on and the Premier League confirmed that the decision was upheld by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR).

In a post on X, the league explained that the ball struck Bassey’s supporting arm as he attempted to block the shot, therefore not constituting a punishable handball.

"The referee’s call of no penalty for handball was checked and confirmed by VAR," the Premier wrote on social media.

"With it deemed the ball hit Bassey’s supporting arm as he attempted to block the shot."

Reacting to the decision, Merson suggested the outcome could easily have gone the other way but accepted that the officials had reviewed the situation.

"If it doesn't hit Bassey's arm," Merson told Sky Sports. "It's going in but they've had a look and it's not been given."

Bassey played the entire match and continued his impressive run of form for Fulham, delivering another composed defensive performance.

The Nigeria international has become a regular figure for the Cottagers this season, registering one goal and one assist in 23 league appearances.
