Udinese manager Kosta Runjaić has explained why Nigerian goalkeeper Maduka Okoye will be released to the Nigeria Football Federation for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.
Okoye, who has been in good form for the Italian side since returning from a betting ban, was included in the Super Eagles’ 54-man provisional squad ahead of preparations for the biennial tournament.
Speaking at Saturday’s pre-match press conference, Runjaić confirmed that the Nigerian international will join the Super Eagles’ camp following Udinese’s clash with Serie A champions Napoli at the Bluenergy Stadium on Sunday, December 14.
"We're considering this issue. After Napoli, we'll probably no longer have Rui Modesto, Okoye, Bayo, and Zemura, but we've known about it for some time,” he said.
“Kamara won't be available against Genoa, perhaps he'll return against Napoli. We're evaluating who to play on the wings, but it's something that will become a reality after the Napoli match. For the Genoa match, everyone except Atta and Kamara is available."
The decision aligns with FIFA’s regulations requiring clubs to release players for the tournament. FIFA had previously instructed clubs to make players available starting December 15.
Since returning from his suspension, the Nigerian international has kept two clean sheets and saved a penalty across seven league appearances.
Okoye’s departure will be a significant loss for the White and Blacks as they aim to secure a spot in either the UEFA Europa League or the Conference League.
