'We nullified most of their threats' - Dele-Bashiru credits teamwork for win against Algeria

Nigeria’s Super Eagles secured a 2-0 victory over Algeria on Saturday in the quarter-final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, booking their place in the semi-final of the tournament.

Following the win, midfielder Fisayo Dele-Bashiru spoke on the team’s performance and preparation.

Dele-Bashiru, who plays for Lazio, described the outing as “very very good performance from the team. I think it was a convincing victory.”

He highlighted the importance of implementing their training ground strategies during the match.

“Everything we worked on the training ground we put into practice today. We knew Algeria would be a difficult side because they are very good players but I think we nullified most of their threats and we also finished our chances which gave us a victory,” he added.

The midfielder emphasized the collective effort behind the victory, pointing to both the coaching staff and his teammates.

“Everyone collectively, the coaching staff, the players, everyone. We've we've really been jelling over the last few weeks,” Dele-Bashiru said, underlining the cohesion within the squad.

He further stressed that the team’s mental approach in training is translating effectively onto the pitch.

“And I think everything we're doing in training, our mentality, our mindset, we're putting into practice on the pitch and we're showing it in our performances,” he remarked.

The Eric Chelle-led Super Eagles have impressed in Morocco, winning all their matches so far in the tournament.

Their consistent form has positioned them among the favorites as they advance to the semi-finals.

Nigeria, three-time Africa Cup of Nations champions, will face host nation Morocco in the semi-final.

The high-stakes clash is scheduled for Wednesday, January 14, with a place in the final on the line.
