Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle addressed the media following Nigeria’s 2–1 victory over Tanzania on Tuesday, providing clarity on Victor Osimhen’s reaction after being substituted late in the match.
Nigeria secured all three points in their opening fixture, with Osimhen playing a central role in the Super Eagles’ attacking display before making way for Paul Onuachu in the 86th minute.
The substitution appeared to draw a visible reaction from the Galatasaray forward, prompting questions during the post-match press conference.
Speaking on the matter, Chelle explained that the situation had already been discussed privately with the striker.
“We talked with Victor, and it will stay between me and him. If you want more information, you have to tell him to ask me,” the coach said.
Osimhen was heavily involved throughout the contest, using his pace, dribbling, and sharp attacking instincts to unsettle the Tanzanian defense.
His movement repeatedly stretched the back line, creating multiple scoring opportunities for Nigeria and forcing defenders into hurried clearances and last-ditch interventions.
The forward came close to scoring on several occasions, narrowly missing the target with a powerful drive.
He also found the net during the match, only for the effort to be ruled out for offside. In another key moment, a goal-bound attempt was cleared off the line, denying him a deserved addition to the scoreline.
With the opening victory secured, attention now turns to Nigeria’s next fixture. The three-time African champions are set to face Tunisia in their next match of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations on Saturday, December 27.
