Algeria head coach Vladimir Petkovic has welcomed the prospect of facing Nigeria in the quarterfinals of the Africa Cup of Nations, describing the Super Eagles as worthy title contenders.
The Desert Foxes booked their place in the last eight on Tuesday evening with a hard-fought 1–0 victory over DR Congo, a result that set up a mouthwatering clash against Nigeria.
The Super Eagles sealed their quarterfinal spot in emphatic fashion after thrashing Mozambique 4–0 on Monday.
Speaking after the win over the Leopards, Petkovic said his team’s attention has already shifted to the encounter with Nigeria, which is scheduled for Saturday.
"We will start thinking about the Nigeria match now, focusing on our strengths," he said.
Petkovic expressed excitement about playing high-profile matches at this stage of the competition, stressing that intensity and discipline will be key against a strong Nigerian side.
"I'm happy with these kinds of matches because they require us to work hard and play aggressively against title contenders," he added.
He also played down concerns over recovery time, insisting that rest days will not be a decisive factor.
"The issue of getting three or four days of rest is not important at this stage. Our focus is on preparing well mentally and physically for the next match."
Algeria will be hoping to draw inspiration from their memorable victory over Nigeria at the 2019 AFCON, where they defeated the Super Eagles in the semifinals on their way to lifting the trophy.
