Will Boniface's loan deal be terminated? Werder Bremen chief provides key update

Werder Bremen sporting director Clemens Fritz has commented on speculation regarding Victor Boniface and the possibility of an early termination of his loan from Bayer Leverkusen.

The striker, who missed Bremen’s recent match against FC Augsburg due to a knee injury, has struggled to make an impact since joining the club, intensifying discussions about his future.

When asked about Boniface’s current situation after the Augsburg match, Fritz provided an update on the player’s injury.

He was quoted as saying by Deichstube. “Victor is injured at the moment and we are in contact with the Leverkusen doctors. We want to let it calm down a bit for now.

"He'll switch off for a few days, but then we'll have to see how it develops.”

The sporting director highlighted that the degree to which the knee injury affects Boniface will determine the next steps, adding that “after that, however, the topic of ‘sporting future’ could well be on the table.”

Fritz then addressed how the club plans to proceed with the striker once he recovers, making clear that no decisions have been made.

He explained, “Then we'll see together how we continue to proceed,” signaling that discussions regarding the loan are ongoing.

At the same time, he emphasized that there is no immediate intention to terminate the arrangement, stating, “As of now, neither Victor has approached us, nor are there such considerations on Leverkusen's or on our side. First of all, it's important that he gets fit again.”

According to Fritz, all other matters concerning Boniface’s loan remain open and undecided at this stage.

Boniface joined Werder Bremen on loan from Bayer Leverkusen following a failed transfer to AC Milan.

His start in the Bundesliga has been challenging; he has recorded just two assists this season and is yet to score a goal for the club.

The coming weeks will be crucial in determining whether Boniface will continue at Werder Bremen for the remainder of the season or if alternative arrangements will need to be considered.
