German Bundesliga side Hamburg are set to finalize the signing of Nigerian forward Philip Otele after reportedly winning the race for the versatile attacking winger.

Otele was also linked with possible moves to English clubs Wolverhampton Wanderers and Birmingham City, but the attacker is reportedly set to complete a transfer to Hamburg before the close of the January transfer window. 

According to Sky Sport Germany transfer market expert Florian Plettenberg, a full agreement has been reached with Basel, with Otele’s medical scheduled for today.

The transfer is structured as a loan deal with an option to buy for the 26-year-old, who has gained recognition for his versatility in attacking positions. 

Otele has previously featured in Nigeria’s provisional squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

He was named in the 54-man roster for the Super Eagles but did not make the final 28-man list for the tournament.

Despite this, his performances at club level have continued to attract interest from European sides, leading to his move to Hamburg.

This impending transfer represents a significant step in Otele’s career, marking his first experience in German football after his time with Basel.

The structured loan deal with an option to buy provides Hamburg with the opportunity to assess his impact before committing to a permanent transfer.

The medical scheduled for today is expected to clear the final step in the process, allowing Hamburg to officially announce Otele as part of their squad. 

Philip Otele’s arrival at Hamburg will add depth to the club’s attacking options and provide flexibility across forward positions.

The completion of this transfer is anticipated to be confirmed once the medical and final contractual formalities are concluded.
