Why U21 Stars Awaziem & Yahaya Can Play For Porto In UCL Despite Omission & Nwakali Cannot
Published: September 04, 2018Nigeria international Chidozie Awaziem is in line to make his debut for Porto in the UEFA Champions League.
The central defender has been left out of Porto's List A but remains eligible to be fielded in the competition as he has been registered on List B, which contains U21 players registered by Porto for the previous two years.
Awaziem, who joined Porto in 2015, is currently out of favour at the Primeira Liga giants and was earlier linked with a departure from the club before the close of the transfer window in most European countries.
He was on the bench in the opening two matches of the season but was frozen out against Vit. Guimarães and Moreirense.
Former Flying Eagles right midfielder Musa Yahaya qualifies to feature for Porto in the Champions League through the List B but his name has to sent to UEFA no later than 24:00CET the day before a group stage match.
A third Nigerian U21 player, Arsenal loanee Kelechi Nwakali, has not been included in manager Sérgio Conceição's 20-man list and cannot be registered on List B.
