Man Utd midfielder stands by his decision to commit his future to Poland over Nigeria, England
Published: March 11, 2023Manchester United midfielder Maximilian Oyedele has made it clear he does not regret his decision to commit his international future to Poland.
Born in Manchester to a Polish mother and Nigerian father, the 2022 FA Youth Cup-winning player also qualifies to wear the jerseys of Nigeria and England, but became provisionally cap-tied to Poland when he came off the bench in a European U19 Championship qualifier against Bosnia in September 2022.
With his appearance against the Bosnians, it means Oyedele has to request for a change of association should he decide to play for Nigeria or England in future, as long as he does not make a competitive appearance for Poland's senior national team.
However, the 18-year-old appears to have shut the doors on playing for Nigeria and England for the time being, and also played down talk that he chose to play for Poland because of his mom.
"The Polish Federation was the first to express interest in me, invited me to a training camp, to a national team match," Oyedele said to Super Express Sport.
"And I wanted to try my hand at the international arena. I've only had a few meetings behind me, but I'm happy with the decision I made."
Oyedele has been named in Poland's squad for the European U19 Championship qualifiers this month.
Poland will face Israel (March 22), Latvia (March 25) and Serbia (March 28) as they aim to qualify for this summer's U19 EURO in Malta.
