Should Manchester United, Chelsea be worried about Osimhen's injury history?
Published: April 12, 2023Super Eagles forward Victor Osimhen has been linked with Manchester United and Chelsea due to his sensational form at Napoli.
Osimhen is Serie A's top scorer with 21 goals and has registered 25 goals in all competitions for Napoli this season.
The Napoli forward has missed the last two league games due to injury and will not be involved when The Blues take on AC Milan in the Champions League on Wednesday, April 12.
In his debut season at Napoli, he missed nineteen games due to injuries, missed thirteen last season, and has missed nine games due to injury worries this season.
Osimhen's injury history looks bad and for a player that would command more than 150 million, it is a cause for concern.
However, getting Osimhen is a risk worth taking for either Manchester United or Chelsea, especially when you consider his undeniable quality and the fact that he is a massive upgrade over the present attacking options at both clubs.
Interestingly, when you take a look at his injury history this season, the concern might not be as huge as it looks.
Osimhen before his latest injury had only missed four league games and had played more than 20 consecutive games without getting injured, the longest he has gone without getting injured since joining Napoli.
This means he can still stay fit over a long period of time. With better medical attention, monitoring and care, the Nigerian forward can be kept fit for most of the season
It would have been a different case if he had a recurring knee injury or any frequent injury to any critical part of his body
Additionally, we have seen players with a poor injury record improve when they move to a new club, particularly ones with better medical personnel than the previous ones.
A good reference is Erling Haaland, who had a poor injury record at Borussia Dortmund but has missed just three games because of injury concerns since joining Manchester City in the summer.
Conversely, players like Paul Pogba and Naby Keita had a clean slate of injury records before joining Man United and Liverpool respectively but became prone to injuries at their new clubs.
With Manchester United's lack of goalscoring outlets other than Marcus Rashford and Chelsea's lack of prolific goal scorers, they should go all out for Osimhen in the summer even with his concerning injury record.
