Chukwuemeka to stick with Chelsea for remainder of season, will not fly with England U20 squad
Published: May 16, 2023England have suffered a big blow ahead of their 2023 FIFA U20 World Cup opener against Tunisia with talented Chelsea midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka opting not to travel with the squad to Argentina on Tuesday.
According to Evening Standard, Chukwuemeka has delayed his trip to Argentina to help injury-hit Chelsea through the end of the season.
Apart from the Young Lions' opener against Tunisia, Chukwuemeka will also miss group games against Uruguay and Iraq.
Chelsea interim manager Frank Lampard will be able to count on the services of the 19-year-old for the Premier League matches with Manchester City, Manchester United and Newcastle United.
Chelsea are facing an injury crisis in central midfield, with Mateo Kovacic and N’Golo Kante feared out for the rest of the season, while Mason Mount is doubtful to return to action this weekend after missing the last four matches in the Premier League due to a pelvis injury.
Chukwuemeka has yet to play a single game for the Londoners since Lampard's second coming as Chelsea coach
The Anglo-Nigerian has missed eight games in total due to fitness issues and manager's choice.
Chukwuemeka inspired England U19s to European Championship glory last summer, scoring three goals and contributing two assists during the tournament in Slovakia.
