Done deal: Nigeria-eligible defender who spent 15 years at Chelsea joins Swindon Town
Published: August 04, 2023With a statement on their official website, EFL League Two club Swindon Town have confirmed the signing of London-born Nigerian defender Tariq Uwakwe ahead of their season opener against Colchester United on Saturday, subject to EFL approval.
Uwakwe was on the books of Premier League side Chelsea for fifteen years, before transferring to Crewe Alexandra on a permanent contract in January 2022.
The 23-year-old has joined Swindon Town on a free transfer after rejecting a new contract at Crewe Alexandra, for whom he made 48 appearances, scoring one goal and registering five assists.
Uwakwe can play a variety of positions including wingback, central midfield and fullback.
He is the second player of Nigerian descent signed by Swindon Town in the summer transfer window, after Udoka Godwin-Malife.
The left-footed player has some League Two experience, having made 36 appearances for Crewe Alexandra in 2022-2023.
In the 2020-2021 season, he notched four goals and four assists during a loan spell at Accrington Stanley.
Swindon Town finished tenth in the fourth tier of English football last season.
