Slavia coach reveals Ogbu has been named in Super Eagles' expanded squad for AFCONQ
Published: August 26, 2023Speaking to reporters at a press conference before his side's Czech Liga clash against Jablonec, Slavia Prague manager Jindřich Trpišovský suggested that Igoh Ogbu has been named in Nigeria's expanded roster for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match against São Tomé and Príncipe.
Ogbu was captain of the Golden Eagles squad that failed to qualify for the 2017 Fifa U17 World Cup, before he was promoted to the Flying Eagles.
The central defender went the distance in every single game played by the Flying Eagles at the 2019 U20 AFCON and was part of the squad for the World Cup in Poland.
It is known that Nigeria Football Federation scouts are scouring Europe for a reliable central defender, with Leon Balogun (35), William Troost-Ekong (29), Semi Ajayi (29) and Kenneth Omeruo (29) not getting any younger in football terms.
Ogbu ticks a lot of boxes as a potential Super Eagles player considering the fact that he's young and previously played n the Nigeria youth team set-up.
In quotes relayed by RUIK, Trpišovský stated: "Honestly, I would like at least one more player. We know what the injuries and things are like, the national team will come, for which more than 80% of the squad will go.
"For example, we already know that Ogbu will go."
Ogbu has impressed in the new Czech Liga season, helping Slavia Prague post clean sheets in three of their first five games in the division.
On the flip side, he took the walk of shame in the 58th minute of Slavia's Europa League third qualifying round first leg clash against SK Dnipro-1 after he was shown a red card for dangerous play.
