Chelsea made an enquiry about signing Super Eagles striker last week
Published: September 07, 2023Chelsea reportedly made an enquiry about signing Nigeria international Taiwo Awoniyi few days before the close of the summer transfer window.
According to The Athletic UK (subscription required), the Blues contacted Nottingham Forest to ask about the possibility of signing Awoniyi in the final 48 hours hours of the summer transfer window.
Nottingham Forest did not want to do business with Chelsea so late n the window and turned down their approach.
Chelsea strengthened their forward line with the signings of Christopher Nkunku and Nicolas Jackson from RB Leipzig and Villarreal respectively in the summer transfer window but the Frenchman is among the players in the treatment room.
Assuming Taiwo Awoniyi's deal went through, the 2013 Fifa U17 World Cup winner would have provided much-needed cover in that position.
The Nigeria national teamer was arguably the most in-form player in the Premier League last month, having netted in each of his first three games for Nottingham Forest, taking his streak dating back to last season to seven consecutive Premier League matches.
Awoniyi is the third African player to find the net in seven consecutive Premier League matches, after Mohamed Salah and Emmanuel Adebayor.
Signed from Union Berlin in the summer of 2022, the Liverpool-reared striker has a contract with Nottingham Forest until June 30, 2027.
